This week, Wharton MBA notified many round 2 students about the admissions decision. One of my client got in with a nice scholarship, and another one did not - although both of them interviewed. Although there are no available numbers to answer the question regarding Wharton MBA, here is some other data.
Businessweek magazine publishes self-reported information from top MBA schools about how many students they interview and how many are offered admissions.
- MIT Sloan interviews 17% of the applicants, and admits 13%
- Columbia interviews 27% of the applicants, and admits 15%
- NYU Stern interviews 23% of the applicants, and admits 13%
I calculated the percentage of the interviews resulting in an offer in some MBA programs:
Cambridge - ( 33% Interviews / 27% Admits )- 81%
MIT - 76%
HEC - (20% Interviews / 14% Admits) - 70%
Yale (25% Interviews / 17% Admits) - 68%
Darden - (38% Interviews / 26% Admits) - 68%
Anderson UCLA - (44% Interviews / 29% Admits) - 66%
NYU - 57%
Columbia - 56%
IMD - (42% Interviews / 22% Admits) - 52%
University of Texas - ( 52% Interview / 24% Admits) - 46%
Fuqua Business School at Duke (53% Interviews /24% Admits) - 45%
Tepper, Carnegie Mellon- (72% Interviews / 27% Admits) - 38%
I'm excluding schools like Tuck, IE and Kellogg that requires most or all applicant to interview or schools like HBS, Wharton and Chicago who do not disclose this information.
The conclusion from the numbers above is that schools use the interview differently. Some schools do most of the screening before-hand and the interview is the final and critical part, and for some this is an equal part as the rest of the application (essays, recommendation, GMAT.)

Yael, I cannot thank you enough for your endless support, patience, and guidance throughout this process. Without your positive energy, I am certain I would not be attending Wharton this fall!- Student attending Wharton, from the US/Asia
